Trash and Litter Collection
Classes and the after-school green group Green Lions routinely canvas the school yard and collect litter and windblown trash. This prevents the trash from entering storm drains and polluting the nearby Chesapeake Bay.
Rain Cisterns
Thanks to a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Lakeland was able to purchase two 330 gallon rainwater cisterns to capture storm-water runoff for nearby gardens. Blue Water Baltimore installed the cisterns and provided classroom instruction on their importance. This spring students will be actively involved and designing, engineering, and creating an irrigation system using a solar powered water pump.
Rain Garden
As part of Earth Day activities in 2014, 3rd Grade students worked on planting a rain garden with the help from Blue Water Baltimore and Landscape Architect Jean Mellot. The students selected the site for this garden because of water buildup on the sidewalk.
